We are delighted to announce the opening of Mkunwa pre-primary class just 10 months after our chair of Trustees Tim Varney pledged to make sure that these children would get the education they deserve.  Last October Tim was so moved by the desperate situation for youngsters at Mkunwa primary school that he put out a Facebook appeal for help - within 10 days our incredible supporters had pledged enough money to fund a teacher and assistant - truly amazing.

The new Mkunwa classroom

Costika and Mwajuma started teaching the children in January but have had to use a storeroom as there was no classroom - not ideal but at least the children were learning.

Thanks to our generous donors and supporters we raised enough money to build and resource a brand new classroom.  Work began in June with over 100 parents and community members turning up to help.  Just 6 weeks later and the classroom is complete.

When we first met the children last October they were sat under a tree in the hope that they might learn something.  Now these 102 children aged 4 – 6 rush to school in the morning excited about the day ahead.

Children desperate for an education

Hundreds of people turned out to celebrate the opening of the classroom including the local press and representatives from the regional education office.  Mkunwa’s head teacher told us “Our children’s lives have been transformed thanks to EdUKaid.  They have teachers to teach them and a safe place to learn.  Thank you, thank you, thank you."
