Mitengo School is half way between the EdUKaid offices in Mikindani and the local town of Mtwara. Renovation work was completed and the pre-primary class opened in 2015 thanks to funding from the British and Foreign Schools Society, The Marr Munning Trust and the Charles Hayward Foundation.

In 2021 there were 111 pre-primary children and 506 primary children enrolled in the school.

The head teacher says “Our children are prepared for school now; they are excited about pre-primary, and prepared for first standard.  We have had a volunteer teacher before EdUKaid so children have been introduced to S1 softly, but now pre-primary is bigger and better…   Children are ready to read and count from a young age – they are ahead.”

“We can see a difference in the children from before the class was open. The children can count, write, draw, sing songs.  We are hopeful for the future, and happy,”  says a parent.
