Fiona Heydari and Thom Pears brave the icy Serpentine to raise money for EdUKaid

Local primary school teacher Fiona Heydari and her partner Thom Pears braved the icy water to swim London’s iconic Serpentine Lake to raise money for EdUKaid.  The couple, who are both wild swimming enthusiasts, took on the challenge as part of Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls Primary Schools efforts to raise money over the next year in support of EdUKaid’s work with disadvantaged children in southern Tanzania.

Swimming a mile in an impressive 49mins 07 seconds, Fiona and Thom joined a record breaking 6 thousand swimmers to complete the challenge at the 2012 Olympic swimming venue in Hyde Park.

Thom and Fiona have already raised over £500 for EdUKaid through sponsorship but Fiona already has plans to raise more.  Inspired by their teacher’s Serpentine Swim, children at Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls Primary School will be taking part in their own sponsored swimming event later this term.

EdUKaid’s Programme Director Teresa Wells told us ‘The money raised by will make an incredible difference to the children we support – it will be used to fund a pre-primary teacher at Mnaida school in rural Tanzania for 12 months, giving children the education they need and the chance of a better future.'
