Why sponsor a child through EdUKaid?
Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. The standard of living is very low and the Government’s lack of money means they face huge challenges in providing even basic services, such as education. Schools are woefully equipped, with insufficient classrooms, desks, chairs and books, and no teaching aids or displays. Not only this, many families simply cannot afford the costs associated with schooling, such as uniforms, exercise books and any school fees. By sponsoring a child you will be assisting EdUKaid in improving children’s access to school and the quality of education.
How does it work?
We ask our sponsors for a minimum donation of £10 a month. We use this on-going source of funding to support the communities in Tanzania that we work with. This includes: Paying for the most vulnerable children to go to school. Providing resources and improving facilities at the 12 schools we support, so that the whole school community can benefit from your donation.
What do I get for my sponsorship?
EdUKaid will provide you with a photograph and information about your sponsored child, their family, home and their school. We will keep you updated on their progress, and any improvements made at their school. We provide opportunities for the children to respond to you with drawings and, as their English skills develop through secondary school, to write to you themselves, however we do not force this. You will also have the satisfaction and knowledge that you are helping a child to realise their potential.“Thank you for the help you gave to me and my young sister, for the school fees you paid… I was the first in exam results.” Daudi George, age 16.
What does it cost?
To sponsor a child, EdUKaid needs a minimum monthly donation of £10 – that’s just 33p a day! With this we can:Enable the most vulnerable children to get an education. Your donation directly pays for their uniform, shoes, socks, exercise books, pens and paper, and any school feesSupply desks, chairs, pens, paper and enough text books for each subject on the principle of 1 book per 2 childrenIntroduce pre-primary classes so that children are stimulated and socialised in a school environment before they reach age 6Renovate long neglected school facilities such as cracked floors, door-less latrines, leaking water-tanks and corroded roofing
Pilot and establish a school feeding programme so children can concentrate better in class as they are not hungry.
Our minimum monthly donation is just £10. Please give more if you can.

More about Education and Child Sponsorship in Tanzania
Primary education in Tanzania, as in many African countries, has a very different system to in the UK and it can actually take 13 years to complete seven standards if children do not pass their end of year exams. It is not common for this to happen, although it an take longer than hoped.Secondary school also has a similar problem that it can take more than the normal four years. Pupils who attend secondary school are usually more motivated but often struggle from a poor primary education.Health issues and attendance at schools are a factor that distinguishes African schools from Western ones. Truancy is common but not because the school children are poorly behaving, but because they have to farm, look after sick relatives or are ill themselves. We will try and reduce this by as much as possible, but it is simply part of their culture and economy that we will not be able to change. Excessive absence will lead to the child being removed from the project so that money and opportunities are not wasted. It is possible that pupils will move from the area or, unfortunately, die, in which case we will inform you. You can end your sponsorship, transfer it to another child or support the project generally.EdUKaid is essentially operating in an environment of extreme poverty, with multiple factors influencing a child’s ability to stay and succeed at school. EdUKaid’s other projects are working to improve conditions so that children are well placed to realise their potential. There is a Tanzanian saying, “It takes a whole village to educate a child.” We now live in a global village so it is our turn to help educate our children.
