A Warm Welcome to MikindaniNovember 25 2016

This October our new Programme Director, Teresa Wells made her first journey over to Tanzania. This is her story…

Day 1: So, all packed for Tanzania and ready to go (1 ½ hours too early) feeling both excited and a little nervous. Not my normal travel packing – less bikinis and romance novels – more mozzi spray and packs of pencils. Really looking forward to meeting the amazing team and seeing our work in action but also I know I will see a great deal of desperate poverty and stories that will be hard to bear.

Day 2: After a long but pretty easy going journey we are in Mikindani. We have spent to day exploring and meeting some amazing people. Everywhere you go people say hello – or ‘Jambo’ and the kids just want to play all the time. Not a bad place to spend your working day.

Day 3: Meet some of our new friends.

Day 5: Lovely boat trip to the village of Pemba on our day off.

Day 8: I have spent the last few days visiting our school and meeting our staff – they are all truly amazing and have made us feel so welcome. I have also met the teachers, head teachers and government officials who we are working with to improve education for thousands of children in Mtwara.  – they say many many times thank you to EdUKaid for all we have achieved. Their lives and the lives of the communities they work are transforming each day. These schools, which have so little, gave us gifts of cashew nuts and clay dishes as thanks for our work - astonishing and incredibly humbling.

Day 9: Up early this morning – Off to visit some more schools today so will post again later. In the meantime, here are some pics of my basic but homely accommodation. Loving the mosquito net – it’s like having your own den.

Day 10: It’s been an interesting night – having had no electricity from late afternoon we spent a lovely evening at 10 degrees meeting some new friends from Austria, Namibia, South Africa and Bath!!! Returned to the house at 9 with still no electric so had an early night.

Day 11: Well it has been an amazing week meeting some incredible people, young and old, and getting to know the region better. Feeling sad that I am coming to the end of an amazing trip but looking forward to seeing the family and a warm bath!
